The first time I remember ever talking to Jay was during my first year at Tulane when he came into the first year architecture studio and asked me if I knew where another student was. Three years later, he sat behind me in class and I would hear he and his friends joking and talking.
After spending four years and who knows how many hours in the same building together, we finally spoke more than a few words to each other. It was the annual Faculty Auction evening when we raise funds for the Architecture School’s Beaux Arts Ball. We had been partaking in some libations and some of my classmates were moving the party to their apartment. Jay had been a few doors down with his friends and they made their way to our party. He came into the room and started talking to my friends and me. Actually, he came over trying to show us his dance moves. He thought after spending time with his Puerto Rican and Salvadorian friends that he had learned some smooth moves. Now he knows who has the dance moves :) So we ended up dancing and talking and his friends decided to move on to a bar when the party started shutting down. They invited my friends and I but I was the only one who said yes. I figured a bunch of nerdy architecture guys? I’ll be fine on my own. So we all went to the bar and Jay and I found a dart board and a bottle of wine. We spent the rest of the night there, talking, playing darts (I swear I get better the more I drink), and getting to know each other. At the end of the night, we each made our way home and the next morning we reconvened to get breakfast, spending the rest of the day listening to his roommate’s band.
It took us awhile to give the gf/bf titles because of our architectural distractions (Jay in thesis, me working) but we both knew that we enjoyed each other too much to let that get in the way.
